Top Picks: TV

HIS & HERS: Limited Series (January 8)
In rom-coms, the old screwball subgenre of “comedy of remarriage” will always work like a charm—pitting estranged lovers against one another, and letting us see why they’re actually destined to be together after all. Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal are one such couple, in this mystery-thriller based on Alice Feeney’s 2020 novel of the same name.
One is a cop and the other’s a news reporter, and each suspects that the other must be responsible for the confounding murder case they’re both covering—so yep, it probably wasn’t an amicable split. With Pablo Schreiber, Marin Ireland and Poppy Liu in the supporting cast, the pair’s reunion is already a sure thing: it’s the twisty road there that’ll be worth watching.

Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials (January 15)
Craving more good ol’ fashioned whodunnit magic, once you’re done with the latest Knives Out mystery? Look no further than this stately Christie adaptation, featuring Helena Bonham Carter, Iain Glen and Martin Freeman amongst its lineup of suspects.
It all goes down at a celebration at a “lavish country house”, where a dead body is the ultimate party pooper. Our hero sleuth is Mia McKenna-Bruce as Lady Eileen “Bundle” Brent, a vigorous young aristocrat determined to get the bottom of the mystery over three tantalising episodes. Can you pick the killer before she does?

Bridgerton: Season 4 Part 1 (January 29)
Who are we up to now—second-oldest Bridgerton boy Benedict, played by Luke Thompson? Okay, then. He falls deep with Sophie (Yerin Ha) at a masquerade ball in the first episode of this frothy period romance’s latest season, of course unaware that she’s actually the lowly yet resourceful maid of Lady Araminta Gun (Katie Leung). It’s crazy how much havoc a bit of silvery fabric around one’s eye sockets can cause!!
Each season of Bridgerton has offered a Cinderella story of sorts, pairing wealthy high society types with unlikely outsiders—but this new chapter might offer the clearest class critique yet, and remind viewers of the classic fairytale more than ever before. We’d love it if Nicola Coughlan’s Penelope ends up playing Fairy Godmother.
Top Picks: Movies + Specials

People We Meet on Vacation (January 9)
Something’s changed between Poppy and Alex. She (Emily Bader) is a free spirit, a devoted optimist—he (Tom Blyth) sees the margarita glass as half empty, and loves a solid plan. For years the pair of mismatched besties have gone on vacation together, but this romance adaptation captures them on their first trip in a while, since the last holiday to Croatia went sideways and caused a falling-out of sorts.
Reunited for her brother’s wedding, the friends must once and for all consider whether they’re just that—friends—or whether it’s worth risking their unlikely connection for something even more special. If you’re enjoying a long break over this summer, People We Meet on Vacation could be the perfect seasonal treat.

Longlegs (January 10)
Bolstered by one of the most memorable, confusing and effective marketing campaigns in recent memory, Oz Perkins’ nasty horror movie packs a punch—even if it’s not as intricate or iconic as the mystery-crime films it clearly draws from. Maika Monroe plays a Clarice Starling-esque cop, on the trail of Nicolas Cage’s terrifying killer. Or is he merely inspiring others to do his demonic work, somehow compelling suburban parents to slay their own families?
The film is not able to live up to its own hypnotic buzz, but the scares it does offer are nerve-jangling—Cage’s long-obscured face springing into view, a gnarly nun, yellow eyes peeking from behind a veil.

The Rip (January 16)
Boston princes Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are together again, in this stern-looking crime drama—and joined by Kyle Chandler, Steven Yeun, and Teyana Taylor, who is probably about to nab an Oscar nom for her compelling work in One Battle After Another.
The pair play Miami cops who stumble upon stacks of cash when they raid a derelict trap house, forced to reassess their trust in one another as the almighty dollar promises to divide them. Every January needs a macho action movie—you know, for the dads and uncles hangin’ around after Christmas. This is just the thing, and a sunny Florida setting only sweetens the deal.
